Travel in England by Wildblue on 1 April 2006 1:42pm
Hello, I'm from the United States and have never been to England before, but am hoping to take a vacation there soon, probably not within the year, I was hoping to just kind of wander around and get an idea of the whole country. Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be some good places to visit? Touristy and otherwise.

Hi. The usual places tourists visit are London,Windsor (Just outside London), York in the North of England and Bath,110 miles west of London. All easy to get to by train from London
This is a great Country to travel around with an excellent rail service, the best in the world.
The best time is between April and end of September, when weather is usuall ok and you have the benefit of long days.

The best rail service in the world?

In which parallel universe would that be?

The Lake District and Devon and Cornwall are among the very many beautiful places to visit.

I would also pay a visit to Scotland whilst you're here, beautiful part of the world.

Try the Peak Distrcit, Port Merion in North Wales is worth a visit. It is the villagewhere the 60's TV series The Prisoner was filmed.

As for our rail service, jim must have been extremely lucky to have been left with his impression. : ) Linz

Rail Service. Even with all the U.K.'s rail problems, it is probably still above Amtrak!

How bicycle freindly is England, or rather are there bycycle freindly parts of it?

Mike, I have found the rail services on mainland Europe to be far superior to ours. I have rail travelled in France, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Holland and I was very impressed with their service. Amtrak must be pretty bad then.

There are a lot of cycles in London and there are an cycle lanes along most main routes. I would wear a mask though as the pollution is enormous, especially on the hotter days. I don't know about other parts of the country. Hope this helps, Linz
