Have any of you been to Bangalore?

Karen, my favorite cousin, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She cannot afford the cost of surgery in California so she is going to go to India where it will cost (including the travel costs for herself and her husband) about 1/4 of what it would cost in California. She's checked out the credentials of the hospital and is satisfied that the medical care will be good.

She will be in Bangalore for over two weeks. Any information about the city and its enviorns that I can pass along to her would be appreciated.

Thanks, Geraldine

I've never been to Bangalore, but I do hear it is one of India's more liberal cities, with a bit more night-time entertainment than other places in India. It's also not that far from Mysore, a popular tourist town.

The local government voted last year to change the name of the town to its traditional name, Bengaluru.

I wish I could be a little more helpful, Geraldine.

P.S. Best wishes to your cousin.

Many thanks, Ellerd. I don't think Karen and Scott will be very enthusiastic about pursuing night life while they are there but Karen's very game so I'm sure she will want to take a day trip or two during her recovery so she was happy to learn that Mysore is so close.

Again, good luck to your cousin and a shame she has to do that sort of traveling for surgery.

Tell your cousin not to worry because Indian surgeons are great.
Tell her not to eat food in the street stalls as they are unlikely to be very hygenic. Eat cooked food or fruit like coconut, banana rumbutan as they are protected from the elements by their skin. Watch out for the mosquitos, don't take too much sugar in the diet as sugar attracts the mosquitos. If she is eating spicy food tell her not to cool it down with water - this only makes it worse, tell her to eat chocolate or yogart or drink milk as these types of food acts as a neutraliser to spicey food. Tell her to wear light clothing like cotton, to wear modest clothes too because than the people there will take better care of her and treat her with respect.
hope that helps,

Thanks. I'll pass the info along. Her room will have internet access and she's taking her computer with her.

Also, she'll have a 10 hour lay-over in Singapore on the way back. Anyone know of what she should try to see with such a small amount of time?
