Mount Lemmon by tucsonmike on 30 April 2006 3:35am
My better halfs editor and friend is here with her husband. Linda gave a talk for Elaines Romance Writers Chapter. Yours truly went up Mount Lemmon with Bob.
It's 20 miles from the bottom to the village of Summerhaven at 8000 feet. Tucson is at 2000 feet average. So it is 300 feet per mile or a 6% grade. I have driven steeper but the drop offs are not for the faint of heart. You climb from desert to pine trees. The saguaro stop growing at 4000 feet. You go through scrub and Manzanilla bushes. Then you have the pines. Summerhaven has 100 year round residents, a post office, cafe and a real estate office. For anything else, you have to drive down the mountain. A road goes down the other side to the North, but that is a 1920's logging road and even less for the faint of heart.

It is 25 degrees cooler up there than in Tucson. Beautiful sunny day. You could see the hawks and the eagles.

Then you look out at the valley spread below you. Tomorrow, we are taking them to Tombstone.

You have reminded me of a tour I did up Pike's Peak near Boulder in Colorado in 1978. It was with Mountain Men Tours and we got to about 11,000 feet but were turned back by the ranger as the road to the top at about 14000 feet was closed. I climbed about another 500 feet from our stopping point anyway and got a great view of the side of the higher part of the mountain and also over the prairie.

That would have been an interesting experience, Ken. It is fun to go to the different things.

There is talk of building a tram from Catalina State Park to Summerhaven. Oh the agony from the residents up there LOL!
