  The Chatter Box : Travel
Morocco by Wandering_Andy on 2 June 2006 1:33pm
Hello all,

I've been registered with Palin's Travels for absolutely ages, but I think this is my first post! I'm hoping that all you nice folks will be able to help me...

My girlfriend and I have just booked two weeks in Morocco (in July - the hottest time of the year, what fools we are!), but we're a bit stuck on accommodation. Does anyone have any advice on cool places to stay? Where are the good riads? We're heading to Marrakech and then our plan is to travel by train to Meknes, Casablanca, Fes, Rabat and Tangier, and perhaps explore a bit more of the country. Any help will be great.

We sat down to watch 'Sahara' the other day and are now very excited by what we saw from Michael's stay in Tangier and Marrakech!

I was in Morocco May-June 2005. I stayed at a Riad in Marrakesh called the Sherazade which was near everything and reasonably priced. Very friendly staff.
Kasbah Itran is an old Kasbah in the Valley of the Roses and situated on a bluff overlooking an oasis. You can find it on the internet. Fez is great and there are only a few Riads compared to Marrakesh. I stayed in Riad Charqi. You must stay in the Riads in these two cities. Chefchouen is a majical place in the Rif mts. Casa Hassan is a good place to stay, but make sure you stay in the rooms where the restaurant is.
Essouira on the south coast is well worth a visit, even if just for the day out of Marrakesh. If you like deserts and can take the heat of July a visit to Merzouga is great. You stay in a tented camp and go on dawn camel rides to watch the sunrise. A drive over the Atlas mts. really gives you the feel of Morocco. Enjoy!
