Tideland - Is it that awful? by voxpops on 21 October 2006 4:06am

I have read and seen several reviews of Gilliam's latest film, and the general consensus seems to be that it's a total disaster. Entertainment Weekly magazine gave it an F grade. (For those of you unfamiliar with the North American school grading system, an F is the absolute worst.) Who here has seen it? Do we need to send out teams to destroy every print of this film? ;-)

I've never heard of it! Do you have any links to reviews etc? F seems a bit harsh!

As a movie nerd, I've learned to take the EW reviews with a grain of salt. Like almost every other magazine I know of that publishes film reviews, they seem to gravitate toward foreign films and/or documentaries. Have heard of Tideland but not seen it(still haven't seen "Brazil", dang it!)...if anyone gets their hands on a copy let us know if it deserved such a bad grade.

You still haven't seen "Brazil?" Oh, I admire you! You have yet to have that first shock and awe experience! I envy people who are going to see the Godfather movies or Citizen Kane for the first time...

Sorry. I have nothing to contribute about "Tideland." This is what I say about every director: Every single movie ain't gonna be a gem. It's okay, they're human. For instance, 2 of my personal favorite movies are "Field of Dreams" and "Dances with Wolves." So surely I can find it in my heart to excuse "Waterworld."

So when the list of my favs also includes "MPHG," "Brazil," "12 Monkeys" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," then I can still be in TG's corner.

Having just read the EW review, it seems like some of the criticism ought to go to the WRITER of the story. Was TG the writer?

Hahahaha, I've seen a few clips on YouTube of Brazil and I like what I'm seeing. Hmmm, I think TG did write the movie, but I could be wrong.

What? Awful? It's a BRILLIANT film! Pure Gilliam - his best film since Brazil, I dare say! :-)

True, it's a bit disgusting in a few scenes, but the most parts with Jeliza-Rose are absolutely fantastic and charming. The girl (Jodelle Ferland) is an absolute professional and a terrific actress (the best child actor/actress I've ever seen). The film is strange, surreal, colourful, magical - and really Gilliamish. :-)

I went to see it back in August (it opened in Czech Republic in July on the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary - Terry was present there and I'm so sorry that I was unable to go). It's not an easy film to digest, it leaves you thinking and the impression lasts a long time. It took me a day or two just to *decide* what I thought about it. :-P
