Astro nut?!!! by perfectbitch on 6 February 2007 10:03am
I just saw an item on teletext that told of a serving female astronaut (had been to the space station) who attacked a woman with a pepper spray whom she thought was getting too much attention from a shuttle pilot. This seems an extreme action from someone who I imagine has been through all sorts of psychological tests to ensure the stability of shuttle crews. I have to ask, what is the point of these tests?

Any info or opinions Cori?

Here's a link to the story I read about this rather extreme behaviour. Some of it sounds quite comical, really.

When she comes down...she'll really go crazy, when she expeiences the demise of her career as an astronaut.

I don't know if any amount of testing will find someone immune from the heartsickness our movie industry culture is breeding into us. I think our culture of 'finding true love' is at least partially the reason for this person's irrational behaviour.

It's incredible. Not only do they have to go through a battery of tests to even become an astronaut, they have to train and work under conditions of extreme stress and, if there's ever even the tiniest hint of instability, they're removed from the program. I'd hazard a guess that they'll find some sort of medical problem.

Thr truth is, I don't know any more than you do! One of my neighbors works at the NASA press office and I'll see if I can get some info from her tonight!

Yes, this must be very troubling for the people at NASA responsible for ensuring the mental health of the astronauts! It really is baffling. It seems as if no one who knew her saw this coming, at least from what we know so far.

Tue 9:05 pm Eastern - I just read the above news coverage. It says that the woman who was attacked and the man the attacker was obsessed over WORK AT PATRICK AFB. So does my husband! I wish he wasn't at band rehearsal right now!

(next morning)

1. No one in my husband's dept. knows strnauts personally. His dept. is involved in a whole different mission. All 3 astronauts in this story necessarily DID serve in the USAF 45th Space Wing.

2. FYI here's Nowak's bio, written about her for her space mission last year.

3. Although the story has been all over US cable news, Larry King et al, there really is no new info which actually sheds light on the situation, just a lot of talking head "experts."

Still hoping to talk to my neighbor today but she's probably inundated with people trying to get info out of her which she cannot talk about or simply doesn't know...

I wouldn't want this to put any blemish on the Space Program. Throughout its brief history, NASA has always been very careful in how it screens its astronauts. I've met a few and without exception, they are all definately "engineer" types, which is not a critcism at all.

To me, this situation proves that there's a little devilment in all of us. Some might call this incident "refreshing".

In the 80's, I made a bunch of tv mini-docs for kids on the Space Program and worked with a bunch of astronauts in Houston. Without exception, they were all amazingly together, extremely grounded (pun intended) and the most efficient people I've ever encountered, incredible human beings. A couple had a "wild side", hearkening back to "fun" days of the Mercury astronauts but the fun was always under total control so I just don't understand how someone could go so totally nuts in that kind of milieu. I'm still betting on some kind of medical problem.

I heard that, after the last round of routine tests, there was a question mark regarding the results of her tests. Apparently, the poor woman was expressing much concern about the effects her job was having on the family. I do hope things work out for her. They are so brave.

NASA has enough problems. Even with all NASA's testing, how can you possibly test for this?
Newsweek has an article this week, that the Chinese are planning a manned mission to the moon and eventually want to have mining on the moon.
