Mike, I'm in total agreement. The essense of Dr. King's messasge is 'judge me by the content of my character, not the color of my skin'. I also believe affirmative action has run it's course and should be declared finished. But, there are still vestiges of it in the form of quotas in such things as hiring practices and college admissions. Most of it seems pretty beneign, but when it effects you or your family, you can get angry about it.

We have a number of immigrant groups here, hispanic, Vietnamese, and Muslim/Hindu. There is no problem between us native whites and any of them, because of what appears to be an extremely fair political system. Those who do not consider themselves Americans, and many don't, simply don't complain. Over the years, we've gladly taken the cast-offs or ecnomically disadvantaged from other countries, with only a minimum of "lip-service" because they add far more to our economy than they use up. In return for hard manual labor, their children receive a free education and better medical care than they could ever receive at home.

Bush is now pushing to close our borders to the south, but it just a political "bone" to the far right. It will never happen, in my view.

As far as the rioting in France, some see it as the beginnings of the restoration of the Ottoman Empire. Others of us who are familiar with the press and their predeliction for hyperbole, ie. hurricane reporting, wonder if this won't go away in week or so. I can't imagine anyone living in a country with a government mandated 8 weeks a year vacation time can possibly find much to riot over.

Thanks George. We'll have to see where all this goes in France.

I just finished reading the Economist. The column called Charlemagne had an interesting take on the difference for ethnic minorities in Europe and the U.S.
