Stoning in Iran by Spursfan on 11 July 2007 5:24pm
This should not be allowed to happen anywhere in the world in the 21st century.

It makes the stoning gags in Brian seem unfunny.

Funny how the Brian gags keep on being relevant (altho yes, unfunny now in this instance). And what about some loony reissuing a fatwa on Salman Rushdie, just because he's accepted a knighthood.

I was going to be flippant, but I can't be. This is barbaric and totally unacceptable in this, or any other, time or place. This is the sort of thing our governments should be isolating these sort of countries for.

Hear. Hear. Mind you, it's not so long ago that we burned "witches". It's all so nauseating and barbaric.

I don't intend to be nauseated by going to the link so could someone please tell me what was the crime for this punishment?

Adultery, Ken.

Stop trying to impose western ideas on to other countries with totally alien cultures.

Essentially, this condemnation and the demand for human rights is a western phenomenon. As such the attempts to impose human rights and a liberal democracy upon other countries amounts to little more than neo Imperialism.

I should just like to stress than I do not agree with stoning, rather I disagree with the way in which members of this website attempt to override non-western cultures and impose western values upon those countries.

The same applies in Iraq; Iraq is a country that is ill prepared for the west’s definition of democracy.

I don't think anyone here was trying to impose anything - we are just expressing an opinion. I agree with you especially about Iraq but I cannot but help to find stoning abhorrant.

There is a church in either Needham Market or Stowmarket in Suffolk which has a "Stoning Cross" outside the door. The vicar tried to convince me it was so called because it was made of stone but as this area was a haunt of the Witchfinder General, I supect it was for stoning of "witches".

Perhaps our society is not so very far removed from such barbarism as we would like to believe.
