On January 25, 2007, s bill was proposed to the U.S senate to ban LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered)marriage, civil union, domestic partnership or any similar relationship for same-sex couples.
It would be the first time rights would be taken away from people rather than given. It goes against the 9th amendment reading:
9.The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

No and we have many more pressing things to be passing in Congress than this! They are OUR representatives, what the heck are we paying them for?

Of course it's not right and it's not going to pass but saying "Stop Gay Marriage!" (and "Stop Illegal Immigration") is the best way for right-wing politicians to get attention from conservative voters right now. And it's a great way to divert attention away from the war, our abysmal healthcare, our rapidly failing infrastructure and other critical issues that they don't want to deal with.

Of course it's not right. Why would you deny a segment of the community a basic human right?

The attitude of the Australian government (and the main Labor opposition party) re: same-sex civil unions pretty much reflects the American govt's attitude. A couple of years ago, the Federal govt here passed legislation specifically defining marriage as an act between a man and a woman. Furthermore, when the Australian Capital Territory government passed legislation supporting same-sex civil unions last year, the Federal government moved very quickly in overturning the ACT legislation. How mean.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth...
