Michael at IOE, 26 Sept - edited highlights by geordiegirl on 28 September 2007 11:45pm

I was going to do a verbatim report, but my unedited transcript is one and a half pages of A4, so that's still on file only, and here are the joky bits.

Butterfly3 has given a good flavour of the talk on another thread, so I will say:

Yes, it was a really good talk. he began by saying this audience were his guinea-pigs: he'd use this slide-show ('sorry-power-point presentation') again.
Into the slides: the making of the Eorld's Largest Truffle in Croatia: this was in 2006, so 2006 eggs were in a huge vat, then lots of good truffle added, and the 'visiting celebrity' (Nigel the cameraman)was invited to stir it, whuile the band played Encouraging Music To Stir Truffles. Quite Pythonic, he commented. They were going for an entry in Guinness Book of Records Worlds Largest Omelette, I think
In Turkey: one slide shown of Cappadocia showed the tall erect pointed rocks 'well you get the idea' (LOL there).
Moldova, one of his favourite places, with Olga who he [email protected] stigmatise as 'another Eastern European peasant scratching a living from the land' but celebrated her self-sufficency and hard work & success 'she grows the worlds best raspberries'
Roumania: a boozy bunch of lumberjacks (and they were OK, huge laugh) - they drink brandy a lot, drive into the mountains & chop down trees in a very dangerous way. Ilya Nastase and his Trophy Room cluttered with baby paraphernalia.
Ukraine, Yalta (bizarrely, twinned with Margate - a slightly depressing English seaside town) - where Churchill & Roosevelt met Stalin. Churchill was accomodated in one palace which had a huge sleeping-lion as a base foir an outdoor flight of steps. Churchill wanted to take this home: Stalin said No. And kept on saying NO.
Latvia, for the Summer Solstice celebrations, and the very silly picture of Michael with a lot of leaves on his head: when asked why he'd agreed, he said it was hard to say no to people putting half an oak tree on your head.
After the Gdansk/Kracow mix-up, he described meeting Lech Walesa, who didn't really unbend until Michael said how pleased he was W's daughter had just won Poland's Celebrity Come Dancing! Then W was all smiles & chat.
Meissen factory at Leipzig:no the slide wasn't beautiful porcelain, but toilet bowls. Much explanation from Michael about the latest German thinking about urination - standing or sitting 'what's the thinking here? I'm not going to ask for a show of hands' - almost at the end, now, Driving a tank. Much hilarity from the crew when this was being filmed as he stalled it twice 'clearly I'm not good invading material'
And that's the recorded highlights!
What I haven't included will be covered in the book or series, so hopefully everybody reading this will see the photos/shots for themselves.
He's such an easy relaxed speaker: the 90 minutes went in a flash.

Phew! This has taken long enough! Thanks for reading, folks, and somebody buy me a drink....?

Thanks so much! :D The tank-driving incident was one of my favorite parts in the book.

I don't know about appreciating it Linda - I'm fully expecting to be escorted away by security if he spots me in Cheltenham on Saturday, because I'm rapidly turning into stalker material!
