Bedfordshire, Luton by Lady April on 14 March 2008 4:01am

I noticed a lot of English folk on the site. Are anyone from this area? I've never been to England and have always wanted to go. Besides being second generation Python fan I am also a first generation American of my Dad's side. They are all from that area and I have family there I've never met. Luton has also been the butt of some Python jokes.
What is the Luton area like? Very curious.

Well the airport is quite nice :)

Yeah, I've been in Luton Airport. Flew in from Edinburgh in the morning and was back out by early afternoon ! Managed to fit in an English breakfast on arrival and two pints of Stella Artois before departing.
Did'nt see much of Luton, just a 15 minute drive to a factory I was visiting.

Luton gets a bad press because of the airport and 'it's BORING' - that's probably not quite true. Once you start exploring a place you usually find SOMETHING interesting (usually a building).

I am just curious and want to visit because it is a place of my ancestors as i am sure, going farther back anyway, many other places in England. My maiden name goes back quite a ways as far as I know.
So the airport? What kind of city is Luton? What makes it tick?

geordiegirl - you made me laugh out loud (I'm being fancy and spelling it out)

Actually, Luton Airport is not so bad! It's the most convenient airport for me. Luton itself is quite mixed - there are good and bad areas in all cities. There are some lovely old houses. Also it is multi-cultural.

Wasn't it Lorraine Chase who started this thing about Luton Airport?!!

Oh, it's been fixed up since Dinsdale Pirhana dropped the bomb on the hangar in an attempt to do in Spiny Norman? ;-)

Sorry, I've never been to England, but my maiden name goes back a long way in Cornwall, so I'd like to go, too. The problem is getting my hubby to cooperate in getting a passport!

Getting a passport these days is BS! Getting into Canada from the US is BS now. I mean I have a passport and other requirements to leave the country but they really are making it such a bitch to leave the country.

Hi. My daughter lives in the town of Bedford which is about 20 miles from Luton Airport. It is a pleasant town with a pedestrianised shopping centre, a theatre, cinemas and plenty of restaurants. The riverside is being developed and it is pretty. There are also water activity centres and parklands along the embankment.
