On The Buses by suzulu on 10 September 2008 11:06am

Talking of On The Buses (in Lady S's thread), there was a whole programme devoted to it last night on ITV1 plus an old episode. Olive just makes me crack up!

I didn't realise that the chap who played Reg Varney's clippy (can't remember his name) suffered from depression 'cos he couldn't get any acting work after they decided to axe On The Buses. He disappeared one day in 1987 and there was an appeal for him to return home on TV (by Ruth Madoc of 'Hi-de-Hi' fame). He did, but eventually took his own life. Very sad.

Oh that's so sad:( It seems so many comedians suffer from depression

I don't know about other parts of the world, but many American comedians grew up being bullied. They would use comedy as a way to win over their attackers. By making fun of themselves, the bully had nothing to grab on to.

Kazzzz is right, Mike, when you read a few biographies. The Brit comedians Morecambe & Wise seem to have been rare exceptions.

Historical note to 'On the Buses', Sue - it was filmed a lot at thew bus garage nearest to me in north London & Reg Varney for a while lived in the local Millionaire's Row - when I first came to live here, his former house was pointed out to me (big semi, nothing
flashy, huge garden)

Sad when they get typecast like that. Going back yonks, Rupert Davies (Inspecteur Maigret) was in the same situation
