Probably Just Going to Travel in the U.S. for Now. by tucsonmike on 3 March 2009 1:01pm

I am getting back next to nothing in taxes, so going to California will be a big thing this year.

Mexico is a little too dangerous at the moment.

I am finding with the economy, I want to do less and less.

Where in CA are you thinking of going? I highly recommend Pt. Reyes! It's near San Francisco.

Just where IS Pt. Reyes, Judy? I don't recall hearing about it when we went to California in the 90's. It might possibly be due to our desire to definitely cover other certain areas in a limited amount of time. We took 2 weeks to see S.F., Yosemite, Carmel and Monterey, and Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Thinking about it, I guess north of S.F., but is it on the coast or inland more?

It's on the coast. Beautiful beaches and great hiking.

Oh, I'd love that!

Patty, Pt. Reyes is north of San Francisco, about an hour in average traffic (i.e. heavy but moving along). The town is tiny, but it's the biggest thing around for miles. There's lots of gorgeous scenery, hiking trails, little shops and restaurants. You can't really swim at the beaches--the waves are often huge, and the current very strong. But you can splash about in the wash, or just walk on the long stretches of sand. You have to like the outdoors if you're going to stay there for more than a week. Otherwise, it's a lovely, cool, peaceful place to crash after a long day in San Francisco. It's actually chilly there at night and in the morning, then hot and dry in the afternoon. My kind of weather!

We probably won't go there this year, though. Too expensive. I'm toying with the idea of the Great Lakes, maybe Chicago, or the St. Lawrence seaway--IF I can get Mike off his butt to get a passport, now that we need one to get back into the US from Canada.

Oh, I am an outdoorsy kind of girl. I'd love Pt. Reyes a lot.

I highly recommend the St.Lawrence seaway. Just gorgeous up there. Drove along the river from Quebec for most of a day, crossed to the other side via ferry and re-entered the USA in Maine the following day. We had taken a 10 day trip to Canada then stopped at Acadia for a night on the way back to Maryland. Such magnificent scenery there too.

We took that trip when I was a kid. All I remember is that it was warm but not hot, beautifully sunny, and we bought a huge basket of freshly picked strawberries that were the best thing I'd ever eaten.

But I've never been to Chicago, and I'd like to visit. Maybe we could find a nice place to stay out of the city.

If you get to Pt. Reyes, don't miss the barbecued oysters at the Station House restaurant. Yummy!

I have 2 girlfriends who have been to Chicago and they love it. One might be returning this year for another holiday. can't ask her for lodging suggestions as she usually stays in moderately luxurious city hotels near the action.
