So cruel and demeaning to the animals. I hate this sort of thing.
It's almost as bad as babies being put into baby shows, how can anyone say someone's baby (or pet) is better than someone else's? Bah.

We would NEVER put Tosun in for a dog show as it would be so unfair for the other dogs - he'd win it paws down!!

But actually, although he qualifies on paper for Crufts as a pedigree and has champs in his line, he would be disqualified because...he's had the snip!! They can't enter unless they are entire no matter how good their pedigree. Which suits us.

:)

Willy is too. As soon as we handed him over to the vet for the surgery, we felt so guilty. But the vet says it's for the health of the dog. It breaks my heart that he'll never have any babies.
Kaz, I agree. I'd never dress up a dog or any animal. A wInter coat, or raincoat, is fine, but not something strictly for the owner's entertainment. Poor pooch. coat

I love the bit in Marley and Me where he is going to the vets to have 'the op' and Marley basically tries to escape through the car window. The owner (john Grogan) says to exasperated drivers behind his car - 'cut him some slack'!!

It was a big decision re Tosun - after all, his kennel club name is 'The Black Stud' (NOT chosen by us!). We could've made a fortune !! (only joking)

But at the end of the day, he wouldn't have been the same 'little boy' if he had done the deed, if you see what I mean.

Incidentally his breeder would've kept him if he'd been a girl because she said his head was so perfect. Thank GOODNESS he was a boy!!

:)

I hate to see animals dressed up, too, but I've actually met a couple of dogs who were born clowns who enjoyed it but that cat was not happy.

As to "the operation", there are actually as many and maybe more ill effects from it than there are beneficial effects. There was a fascinating article in the Journal of American Veterinary Medicine last year that was a compendium and analysis of all the studies of neutering that have been done. It was quite eye-opening. I can probably ferret it out if anyone is interested. Of course, there is tremendous social pressure to get it done because so many people seem unable to control their animals' fertility (which is not rocket science; you just keep the boys away from the girls.)

As well as wanting him to stay 'our little boy' we didn't want him clamouring to get at female dogs all the time. Apparently they can really go frantic.

Instead of that he clamours to get at ANY dog that goes past to have a fight (which he has never been able to by the way).

Oh well.

I was brought up with dogs but of course it is different when you are 'in charge'. The last 'family' dog we had before I left home was a female Jack Russell who we got when I was 10. Of course there were all sorts of problems associated with bitches and in later life she suffered 2 phantom pregnancies.

And she used to like to go for peoples feet.....

I think shows and silly clothes should go with the temperament of the dog. I watched a dog show on TV once, and most of the dogs seemed so happy and proud and so eager to please. And some dogs don't mind being dressed up. My mother's dog would tolerate just about anything like that--she'd parade around in her costumes (the dog, not my mother--lol), playing with us and showing off. Sometimes she'd even bring us a piece of clothing, looking at us expectantly. We assumed she wanted us to put it on her. None of our other dogs was like that, though, and we never pushed it.

Orion will occasionally wear a bandanna--key word occasionally. Other than a coat or a sweater, it's just wrong. Ok, maybe one of the jester collars. Maybe.

Well I agree, a coat is for warmth so that's fine. Also, as silly as it sounds, dogs and cat's noses are prone to skin cancer here ( as we have stuff all ozone layer) and people do put sunscreen on their pets.
