Thanking the IOC and whoever else is out there by mrsteabag on 2 October 2009 10:20pm

Chicago didn't get the Olympics. for that I'm grateful. Why?
1. Jobs were one of the selling points. Many of the contracts that would have been given by the city were already done deals with Mayor Daley's cronies. Can we say patronage and nepotism?
2. Who would foot the bill was unclear. People in NE Illinois are getting very tired of having to financially clean up the messes in Cook County.
3. A lot of people in marginalized situations would have been displaced.
4. Maybe you've seen the tape of the ugly street fight that lead to the death of a Chicago high school honors student? That happened just a few blocks from where one of the venues would have been.
FEH!!

I had a feeling Rio would get it as South America hasn't had the games before as far as I can remember.

No, it hasn't, and that's probably why Rio was rewarded the games.. It really didn't matter a bit to me who got them. There are pros and cons in having them.

At the Sydney Olympics, SOCOG (the main organising committee for the games) was dubbed by some of the locals:
Silly Old C...s Organising Games

Like every other city that held the games, Sydney copped billions in debts. I heard that the only city that didn't go into debt for it was L.A., mostly because they already had a lot of the infrastructure (very large stadiums, etc.) in place.

Well,I'm sure y'all are aware that LONDON is hosting the Olympic Games in 2012,still 3 years away, and they are busily constructing a purpose-built "village" for the events and accommodation for visitors, etc,in East London's old docklands by the side of the River Thames.

By all accounts, the finances are already millions of ££ over-budget and I dare not to think how much the eventual bill will be and whether whoever's funding it will ever get their money back?

What do you Palinite Londoners think about this extravagance? Is it really worth it just for a bundle of sporting prestige??

Ev, I think the fact that the country went into so much debt over a sporting event was ridiculous and didn't agree with it at all.
The Olympics aren't my thing at all. I know all the pros, and appreciate the work and dedication of the athletes, but for countries to voluntarily go into so much debt over a couple of week's sports is ridiculous. I just don't understand the world's obsession with sport. I like to keep fit as much as the next person, but sports on this level just does my head in.

Oh and I totally boycotted the Beijing Olympics, for the obvious reasons, did not watch one second of them.
