Floods by kazzzz on 11 January 2011 3:48am
I have just been watching the news here, up north is inundated with terrible floods, today an inland tsunami hit Toowoomba. There were graphic images of a family stuck in a car, the man was slumped over the steering wheel, the news chopper saw them and went for help, When help arrived the car had been swept away and noone knows where they are of if they survived. The choppers have spent the day rescuing people from their rooftops. There have been 8 confirmed deaths and around 70 people missing.
For the last several years this part of the country has had barely and rainfall and now their' houses are being washed away.
This can be such a harsh country. If it's not fires it's floods. Awful.

Just heard that my cousin's house is in the flood path, they're evacuating tonight.

Sorry to hear that Kazzz, between fire and floods it makes you wonder about all those who doubt climate change and global warming. Awful.

It must be terrible for them.

I have friends in Queensland, have not heard from one the other said she is wet, but ok.
Re: Floods by Ellerd on 12 January 2011 3:57am
That footage of the floods in Toowoomba was terrifying. Not something you expect to see in a flat Australian city. The towns below Toowoomba in the Lockyer Valley have been absolutely flattened. Really heartbreaking stuff. :-(

The amount of rain we've received here in QLD this summer has been amazing. In my town, we had close to 500mm last month (average 120mm). What's particularly scary is that the cyclone season proper hasn't even started yet (Feb and March is the peak of the season up here).
Re: Floods by kazzzz on 12 January 2011 4:58am
Ellerd that is exactly what we were saying last night, cyclone season is yet to come. Frightening.
The death toll has risen by a 4 more now but on the good side 27 missing people had been found safe, a lot are still uncaccounted for thought. The water level won't peak until tomorrow in Brisbane so everybody's preparing as best they can. My cousin has life jackets on the kids.
We have been warned to expect flash flooding in Melbourne today and tonight, a lot of rain is coming down here now.

I'm really surprised at the extent of these floods.. some serious damage there.. I've got family in Brisbane but fortunately they're not in the affected areas..
Re: Floods by Ellerd on 12 January 2011 12:38pm
Good luck to your family, Kazzzz.

Aside from some minor flash flooding on Boxing Day, my town has been pretty lucky during this event. One problem we're facing trough is a shortage of supplies. The main highway is cut at Rockhampton to the north and Gympie in the south, so the trucks can't get through. There's no bread or milk in town, fresh fruit and veg is disappearing rapidly, and the canned food section is looking a little scarce. No complaints though - could be much worse.
