These are the latest images of Cyclone Yasi heading for the Queensland coast.
Very scary stuff.

WHOOAH! That looks......not good! Is it going to be anywhere near you, Kazz?

No Terry it's right up north, they're saying it will prob be a category 4, they are evacuating nursing homes at the moment, and I read that animal shelters are flying animals to safety.
They're saying winds will be about 250km/h and storm surges will cause considerable flooding, like the poor Queensland people up there need any more. The Premier Anna Bligh is advising people to get to higher ground, that's what I'd be doing for sure.

I wish I could share your optimism, ev!

Yasi is an absolute monster! Destructive winds will be felt over a much longer stretch of coastline than your usual tropical cyclone. A lot of the towns Yasi is heading for are right on the coast - places like Mission Beach and Cardwell - and the storm surge is predicted to be high.

Here's Yasi's current projected path from the Bureau of Meteorology:

Of course it will be a pretty strong storm, although they tend to lose energy as they approach the coast.

The extra rainfall in the state will be hard for the people already dealing with the recent floods..

People around Innisfail will find it especially difficult, having had a lot destroyed by cyclone Larry in 2006:

God, you Aussies are having it rough. You're in my prayers, okay?

Now upgraded to Category 5..

Most recent warning from the weather bureau:
"Severe tc Yasi is a large and very powerful tropical cyclone and poses an extremely serious threat to life and property within the warning area, especially between Port Douglas and Townsville.

This impact is likely to be more life threatening than any experienced during recent generations. "

That does sound quite serious, actually. I hope everybody in the Cairns-Townsville region stays safe.. I'd be rapidly getting the hell out of there if possible..

The Premier has just announced "Don't bother to pack bags. Just grab eachother and get out of there".
