Spiders in Western Australia- request advice... by Palinite14 on 8 March 2004 6:32pm

In three weeks I'm going to Perth in Western Australia to stay for a week with friends...I have heard some things about redback spiders in Australia. I am not a fan of spiders (not by any stretch of the imagination...) and would like to ask any people who live in/have been to W.A.: Where are the dangerous spiders? Where do they live (in garages, back gardens, etc?)What do they look like? How can we avoid them...and, am I making too much of the whole spider issue? Any helpful/unhelpful information would be much appreciated.
Also, if anyone has any other info about Perth and also about Dunedin in New Zealand, I'm eager to hear anything.

Be careful (obviously) but don't get too hung about the spiders in Perth. I've spent four months with friends in Perth recently and I never saw one. The last time I saw one was near the beach about two days north of Perth on the WA coast. Of all the time I spent in Oz I only saw a few redbacks. They seemed (to me at least) very identifiable by the red stripe on their back. The ones I saw were living in a dusty old shed, but I don't know if thats where they confine themselves (I doubt it). Don't let the worry about spiders spoil what sounds like a fantastic trip, particularly to Perth, one of my favourite places in Oz, where the sun always seem to shine.

Dunedin is lovely too, a little colder perhaps than Perth. I took a trip out to the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin to take a close look at the Yellow-Eyed penguins (one of the worlds rarest) beside one of the only mainland breeding colonies of the unbelievably huge albatross anywhere in the world. As railway journeys go, the Taieri Gorge railway out of Dunedin station and back again was magnificent.

My boyfriend lives and studies in Dunedin... *sobs* haven't heard from him in two weeks... I'm moving on!

Sorry.

I think that the spider problem is not really a problem, it's probably just overamplified. In Australia we get everything, so I wouldn't worry. In all my 16 years of living I haven't once been bitten by a spider, and my father's house is full of them.
Don't panic - a quick spray of Mortein should do it. =D
