Bloomsday by sminobe on 14 June 2004 6:33pm

Anybody have any plans for this coming Wednesday? My usual gang of Readers & I will be reading exerpts from Ulysses at the beach (or should I say, 'on the strand'?) at Santa Monica.

well i live in dublin near a place called sandycove which will be full of people celebrating bloomsday . all dressed up like bloom himself . i hope to go and walk around and see all the celebrations especially outside a posh nosh shop called cavistons . they have a jazz band and an old ex dublin tram and things like that . last year they even gave out free oysters .
there is meant to be a reading of Ulysses at the james joyce museum in the martello tower in sandycove by the famous irish theatre actor barry mc govern which i would love to hear . i have not read Ulysses and i belive it is not an easy read . i did'nt know bloomsday was celebrated outside ireland sminobe . we have had a week long festival in various joycean locations around dublin since last sunday the festival is called
re-joyce ( with typical dublin witt !) i hope you have a great day .
cheers
Linda
p.s it is more irish to say on the strand then at the beech !

wow as i said before i never realised bloomsday was celebrated around the world so much . thats cool.
there is a rumour going about that the owner of cavistons has got part of sandycove villiage closed off for the celebration . however i don;t know how true that is .
did you see the trailer for the film bloom . threy have taken a slight liberty . it looks like they put joyces tower , the martello tower where the joyce museum is right on the strand . it is not like that in reality . there is a big path infront of it and a wall . when you look over the wall you look down over rocks and towards the sea . it is lovely though i walk thier everyday . i love living on the east coast of ireland :0)
heres a link with the history of the joyce's tower : http://www.visitdublin.com/attractions/jamesjoyce.asp
did you know that joyce's face was on the irish 5 pound note before we got the euro ? i have a picture of it if you are intersested sminobe
well with that i will leave you . mails to do then i want to walk out and see whats is going on in sandycove !
cheers
Linda
