Most beautiful place in the UK? by kristinekm on 6 April 2005 1:40am

I'm planning a roundtrip to the UK this summer to see some of the countryside. But I can't decide where to go.
Where whould you recommend me to go and where do you think the most beautiful place is?

The Wye Valley is stunning. Places like Symonds Yat, Ross on Wye, Hay on Wye where there is an annual literature and arts festival. Past guests heve included Maya Angelou, Jools Holland etc. For all I know, Michael Palin could well have been a guest there in the past. The Forest of Dean which is close has a couple of interesting attractions. Clearwell Caves and a delightful almost magic place called Puzzle Wood which is an overgrown pre-Roman mine that could be out of Lord of the Rings.
Apart from that, there's the Lake District, The West Country, and for ruggedness, Scotland and Wales. Port Merion (where The Prisoner was filmed) is worth a visit as the buildings are so unique to the UK. The Peak District has its own bleak charm and if you have time, Ireland is lovely.
Hope this is useful. Linz

The Cotswolds, without a doubt. Some bits are a bit chocolate-box-ish but others are stunning.

Thanks guys - it is always nice to have someting to start with and some inside information :)
Is Sheffield worth a try (I know one place I'd like to see) or should I stick to the countryside? Again Thank You!

If you come to the south search for a south downs walk and do it! You'll see some wonderful coastal views and countryside.

Inland you perhaps could try a place called Leith Hill near dorking - there are some wonderful drives and walks, especially in the bluebell season which is coming up very shortly.

Omigod I've just noticed that the site has censored the town of P-E-N-I-S-T-O-N-E in my message above! Honestly!!

We didn't go into Sheffield - the family took us to Holmfirth where 'Last of the Summer Wine' is filmed, and other places around their town.

Censorship? Spursfan. It's not that bad. I have it on good authority that the cabinet office computer is particularly sensitive and fairly Victorian in what it will accept. It refused to accept an important Health and Safety Document which it had requested. After several attempts to get it through, it was disovered that the word it objected to was Blast!!!!
The document was a report on explosives.

Lol perfectbitch!! Yep, I know what you're saying, but I think that when the site censors words within words, as above, it's getting a bit silly!!

It's quite an innocent little place really! Quite quaint and is the highest market town in England (or the UK I can't remember!). It doesn't deserve to be censored lol!
