Japan by MedevalMaiden on 8 April 2005 11:31pm

Out of curiousity, has anyone else been to the southern part of Japan? Namely Kyushu? I used to live in the Navy base there and it was awesome. It's one of those places where tourists usually don't go and has seriously beautiful scenery.

I live in Japan (currently go to Uni in UK), but haven't been to Kyushu. Is it like Okinawa? I'd love to go there. My friend's mom is from there and her dialect is so warm and cute.

So you are Japanese and live in the UK? How was learning english for you?! Cause I'm learning Japanese since last october (with german as my mother tongue) and it's really, really hard. So I'd like to know how it worked for you the other way round with learning a very different language.

Sorry Ursi but my first language is English :P My father is English and my mother is Japanese, and I went to an International School in Yokohama (did the International Baccalaureate). My parents wanted me to learn English first, so I didn't learn it till I was three. I remember my mom taught me hiragana and katakana. Then I moved to a new neighbourhood where I made loads of Japanese friends and my Japanese ability soared. I'm now fluent. Funnily enough, reading manga (girls) helped me when I was small. Because they put in small hiragana how to read difficult kanji you subconsciously pick up how to read things. Kumon (if you know it) raised my ability immensely too, although, now I've quit it and my ability to write kanji has decreased!

Kyushu is pretty neat, but since its more north than Okinawa, the temperature is a bit colder, but still humid. The islands there are so beautiful, by Nagasaki and Sasebo there's a place called 99 islands and they have tours where you can cruise through them. I lived on a navy housing area that was near a whole bunch of really pretty farms and mountains, and also near an amusement park called Huis Ten Bosch, which is Dutch-themed.

Wish I learned how to read Kanji...sad...
