Dubai - by Katie J on 13 April 2005 6:31pm

I've just been invited to stay with a friend in Dubai for about a week. Has anyone been?

I've always wantd to go, but is it very expensive? Is there much to do? What's the deal with female tourists - will I have to cover up most of the time? (not that I exactly flaunt it!!) Is it worth only going for a week?

Katie

I believe it is very hot out there. Last week the Grand Prix on TV was reporting temperatures of 42c. You would need to cover up even if it is just to protect yourself from the heat and the sun. My brother sails on tankers through the area and has found the heat a problem a times. You might find you are getting 'fried' before the end of 2 weeks but it depends on what you are used to. I found that beer has a curative effect for too much sun exposure but alcohol is not permitted in the area.

Alcohol not permitted?

I got thoroughly wasted at the Dubai Rguby Sevens a few years ago. I was far from alone.

Most decent hotels there have bars. It is an alarmingly alcoholic country given what you might think, public drinking is not allowed but there is a large expat community out there and they are accomodated in that respect.

But apart from the shopping it's generally too damn hot to do anything.

Hi Katie.
I went last September. It was very, very hot - around 40 centigrade or slightly higher each day. It only rains 2 or 3 times a year, for about 10 minutes!
I stayed in Sharjah, which is a bit cheaper. There are 7 emirates, can't remember all of them, but there is Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima (sp?) and I think Abu Dhabi is an Emirate as well as being the capital.
The place is surprisingly cheap. My hotel (The Al Sharq) was only about 30 pounds a night, and the room was huge and luxurious. The shopping is simply marvellous if you like that kind of thing. If not, you could go on a desert safari, or take a trip where the landrovers go up & down the sand dunes very fast, skidding and slipping.
There is a huge amount of building work going on there. I'm glad I went but have no particular wish to go back. Best wishes and have a good trip.

Hi, I have just joined the Palin's chat line. I hope that you have visited Duabi by now and seen the best airport in the world, the elegance of thr hotels and buildings, the safety of travelling around, friendliness of the people, the cheap electronics, DVD's, river trip over to the gold souk etc. This is NOT the Middle East as we know it but a fantastic place to visit time and time again.
