8 Things You Want To Do Before You Die! by KateC on 18 May 2005 6:41pm

Since we have 10 places you want to go, I thought we should have 8 things you want to do! Here is my list:

1) Fly a plane
2) Climb a volcano
3) Learn to ride horses properly (I can but not especially well)
4) Kite surfing
5) Wakeboarding
6) Dirtbiking
7) Travel the world
8) Learn to count to 10 (and write them too!) in more languages than I can already! (So far: English, German, French, Italian, Irish, Dutch and Danish)

Yes I am a very sad person, but its easier than learning the whole language, and my Italian numbers came in useful in Venice for getting my room key when the guy was confused by English numbers!

If anyone can help me learn more counting in other languages, that would be excellent! :)

And in Mandarin Chinese
yi (pronounced ee) 一
er 二
san 三
si (pronounced like sir) 四
wu 五
liu (pronounced leo) 六
qi (pronounced chee) 七
ba 八
jiu (pronounced jeo) 九
shi 十

The numbers after the words are the unicode for the characters. They dont seem to render very well though, even when the browser encoding is changed.

In Russian
adin
dva
tri
chetyre
pyat
shest
syeem
vosyeem
dyevyat
dyesyat (think I have 9 and 10 the right way around!)

Used to be able to do it in Arabic and Mongolian too, but Ive forgotten now.

before this turns into the "how to count to 10 in 80 languages" thread -

my 8 things i want to do before i die:

1. publish my book of poetry

2. learn to play at least one song properly on the guitar

3. sing "ave maria" note-perfect in front of an audience

4. finish my degree

5. permanently escape from this office cubicle

6. read homer's "the odyssey" in the original greek while standing on the shore of the aegean

7. in the fullness of time, hold my grandchild (don't have any yet i'm glad to say!)

8. shake michael palin's hand and thank him in person for all the joy he's brought to my life

Kate C let me test your counting abilities in Danish. Since I'm a Dane I'm a proper judge (lol)

Well, I have already skydived, got a glider pilot's licence, bungee jumped, scuba dived in the Pacific, tracked leopards in Africa, white water canoed on the Zambezi, skiied in the Alps, been on a glacier in Mongolia, shaken Michael's hand, climbed several volcanoes and can count in about 6 languages. I have also fathered a beautiful baby daughter. What's left?
Achieving inner peace and enlightenment I think now comes pretty high on my list. If I can get there before I die life will have been worthwhile

...and in welsh

un
dau
tri
pedwar
pum
chwe
saith
wyth
naw
deg

now u might even fit in 9 things!

I would like to...

-hand glide
-travel around the world in a hot air balloon... in 80 days...
-travel up the amazon
-star in a hollywood movie
-have a baby
-find a cure for cancer and solve all world hunger problems
-visit another planet
-master the art of mirangue making
-poke a celebrity with a twig

I went a bit wild after the first two... anyway who said we had to be realistic? Im rubish at cooking with egg whites.

WIA I am so jealous.
- just adding to that I would love to be able to speak french fluently. instead of poking someone because thats just plain silly.
