Well, could anybody please help me and tell me the difference between UK and GB - it is not something you learn in the Danish schools and I have been wondering about it for a while:)

jim, you're not quite right there.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the countrys name is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" and "Great Britain includes England, Scotland, and Wales"

info comes from here:
http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/print/uk.html
(scroll down to Government)

Ireland is an independent country since 1921.

Well, I never knew about that before either, but I've never thought about it. When you asked it got me interested. And CIA World Factbook is always a good tip, when looking on some info on countries.

The CIA or any US government online fact service have their uses, but sometimes they can go overboard. Some of these sites have warnings that even in places like Greenland, you may not rule out the possibility of being caught up in a terrorist action!

i thought GB was England, Scotland and Wales, whereas UK was England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland. I could be wrong, but that is what I was told when i asked the same question when i was younger

Were always Great Britain in the Olympics. Does Ireland go in on its own?

lol Well Ireland has been independent of the UK since for over 80 years now, I'm pretty sure that Ireland enters things independently of the UK (Eurovisions hould have been a clue!). Just did a whole unit on Irish independence, all terribly interesting! GB is England, Wales and Scotland only. The UK incorporates Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
