After the Tsunami by keys on 5 June 2005 10:16am

I'm heading off to Sri Lanka to help with the reconstruction work going on in August. But with the tsunami gone from the news as it's no longer a 'hot' issue for the general public, has anyone heard/seen anything of how the situation is like there now? Back in Feb, some roads were cleared (but some say for photo ops) already but I've heard recently that some areas still haven't been reached yet! This is definitely going ot be quite an experience...

I went before the tsunami and it was great. Really beautiful and all the people were really friendly. Id love to be able to go again to help out! Nice one!!

Thanks for the link, and i agree the media seems to have completely dropped the subject of the tsunami which is awful considering the amound of devastation that still remains and the help that the affected areas and the people living there still desperately need. Let us know how the trip went when you get back!

Definitely! In the meantime, the preparation is proving to be rather paramount ;)

While in Las Vegas a week or so ago I met a couple who had just completed an around-the-world cruise. They said that when they were in Thailand they went in search of the people who offer elephant rides. The locals told them the most devastating thing since the tsunami has been the dry-up of tourist income on which they greatly depend. Where they used to have 200 people to ride the elephants now they get maybe 4. This couple went back to the ship and had everyone they could find onboard go for an elephant ride. This couple were also told local communities aren't seeing a benefit yet from the relief money that has been raised. Keys, let us know what you find when you get there, and what we might be able to do on this end.

Yes I've hear similar rumours too re: the relief money.

To follow-up on the situation is also one of my primary goals. I wrote a huge essay right after it happened assessing the disaster and what may follow so I'll really eager to find out how life is REALLY like there now too.

:)
