HINDU KUSH by duncs58 on 6 June 2005 3:45pm
Last year I was lucky enough to travel over the Hindu Kush and through the Slang Pass three times. This is in Afghanistan. It is a very rugged but beautiful country. I am back in Afghanistan again this year and will make the journey again. Pity I can't take Michael along to complete his journey.

Congrats. I didn't get through the Salang in 2003 because it was still closed and there was some trouble in that region. 3 times? How did you find Bamiyan? Surreal place isn't, considering how much history has taken place there.

There's an utterly wonderful book called "A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush" by an Englishman who went to Nuristan in the 50s.

Isn't Af pretty high risk these days? I haven't been there since the 70s, before Russian invasion. I'd love to go back, but would be a bit reluctant to get shot at.

Yeah, a Short Walk in the Hindu Kush is a great book. A real capture of a lost world. Afghanistan is much more risky thesedays Pashley, yes. There has been a big increase this year of resistance in the south. And suicide bombers are an increasing trend in Af. One Kabul internet spot i visited in 2003, was blown up this year by a suicide bomber.

Some areas in the north are fairly safe and secure. But safe and secure is a flimsy word there. Anything can and does happen there now at a moment's notice. Most of the risk is to aid workers and troops of course, who are in and out of the southern areas. But there is a pattern emerging of attacks occuring in previously secure areas of the country.
