Inca Trail by robnights on 11 June 2005 4:27pm

Hi all,

whats the best way to trek the Inca trail, without pre-booking via an expensive agent? Could you turn up, and pay to join a guided tour or something? Is it easy to follow the track yourself with a few friends?

Also, what airport would you fly to from the UK that gets you closest to the start of the Inca Trail? And how much do these flights usually cost?

Sorry for being a n00b about this lol.

No matter how you do it, you will need either book it via a travel agent or hire a independent guide. There is no official way to just start walking the trail yourself. You can fly to Lima and then a connection to Cuzco.

My wife and I did the Inca Trail 2 years ago. Fly into Lima and then on to Cuzco. Cuzco is a very beautiful city. I spent many hours just sitting on a bench in the Palza Des Armas people watching. Don't eat any pizza in Cuzco as my wife was sick for the whole trail hike (4 days). I would not do the trail on your own. It's a tough climb! You will need porters. If you get hurt there is no way out, helicopters can not fly into those mountains. There are many tour groups to choose from judging by the number of people on the trail. I will say this about the journey...I hope to do it again some day! It was a magical experience for me. Make sure you get to "The Sun Gate" before sunrise. Watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu was like being at the gates of heaven. The reward for your hard 4 day hike comes here.

Regards from Canada

John
