The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Himalaya - Typographic Error? by sab73 on 20 July 2005 2:16am
The Himalaya - series is being aired on American TV. Its almost like going back to my roots, knowing my people, my country, my culture all over again. I am looking forward to the DVD release.
I missed the episode on Shimla, so I visited the site to read up about it, which is when I noticed M. K. Gandhi’s name is misspelled at-least twice (as Ghandi) ! Any chance this can be corrected?

Well, I hope Michael reads this!

I'm sure most of us have been guilty of that. Sorry! Will get it right from now on. - Cori

Obviously, this is very personal issue with you, but I can imagine the angst you must be experiencing. Having a touch of obsessive compulsive disorder myself, I did find a couple of websites where the leader's name is spelled "Ghandhi". Experience tells me that when translating names into an English written form phonetically, different spellings are quite common, like the name of the current leader of Libya. Perhaps, it may be some kind of regional tradition.

Similarly, Mr. Gandhi's first name is spelled either Mohandas or Mahatma.

Gandhi's first name is Mahatma.

I was under the impression that "Mohandas" was his actual first name (if we are indeed talking about the fellow from India who Ben Kingsly was supposed to look like), and "Mahatma" is sort of a term of indearment. I don't know what it means off the top of my head. Great Soul? Enlightened One? Or was that Buddha, another gentleman whose name gives me difficulty with "h" placement. -Dhavid

On a similar note, I've been doing some reading and note taking on European history lately, and I'm having a heck of a time deciding which names to use. The book written by a Czech author talks about the Holy Roman Emperor Jindrich III, but another translation calls the same fellow Heinrich III. The encyclopedia calls him Henry III. There's a lot of this type of thing- are we talking about Charles? He was Karel in the other book, and Karl in the other. "Louis the German"? What 9th century German went around saying "Ich bin Lou-ee"? More likely he was "Ludwig".
