Tucson by tucsonmike on 28 July 2005 7:26am

I am a New Yorker who now lives in Tucson, Arizona. I love it here and have become very active in the community. I would be happy to answer questions about the city and Southern Arizona in general.
I also have a blog
www.arizonaviews.blogspot.com where I discuss some things from my little world.
I also volunteer at the new Railroad Museum here. I post stuff on a blog for that
www.playingwithtrains.blogspot.com

The hiking is great, winters mild during the day, we have some good museums the Sonora Desert with the Magnificent Saguaro. If you want four seasons, you can drive to the top of Mount Lemmon. Mount Lemmon has the Southernmost ski lift in the United States. You can go on a night visit to Kitt Peak Observatory and look at the stars. We have theater groups and accessible groups for people who want to write.
Welcome to Tucson. Don't hesitate to ask.
Mike

Tucson and the Confederacy.
Don't worry George. I knew nothing about this until I moved here, or that we even had a Civil War battle (skirmish is a better word). It was the farthest West there was a land battle.
The original Anglo settlers here were from the Deep South. (An Anglo is really anyone who speaks English as their primary language. You can be an immigrant from Burma and still be an "Anglo"). For nine months, the Tucson City Government was in the hands on Confederates, which is ironic, considering the city was still predominately Spanish speaking.
The Union Government was getting a little nervous about this, fearing the Confederates would steal gold shipments from Los Angeles heading across Arizona. The Confederates were defeated 40 miles North of Tucson at Picacho Peak. The reenacment is in March.
If there is interest, I'll throw up some resources and the links for Picacho State Park.
Mike
