A1 at Brands by perfectbitch on 24 September 2005 10:45am
I am off to Brands Hatch tomorrow to see the A1 race - an attempt to rival F1. The cars are more equal and the telemetry is minimal so the skill of the drivers is paramount. Some of the young drivers are sons and nephews of past F1 champions - Senna's nephew and Piquet's son for example. I was at Brands when N. Piquet put in a fantastic qualifying lap which was electric and one of the most exciting drives I've seen. Only prob is that I have to be up at 4am to get there in time to get a good viewing positon.

A1 ? Are they sedan type cars or open wheel? Either way it should be really cool. Ayrton Senna was my favorite. Have fun.

Well, the A1 cars are single seater, 3 litre which only differ from each other in livery and chassis set up. There's no ABS or traction control so it's much more dependent on driver skill. The drivers race for their countries and each country gets 1 car. There are lots of countries new to the sport - China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Czech Republic for example. The ticket costs less than half the price of a British F1 GP and there were no over inflated, petulant ego's on view. It was grand and the enormous crowd, loving every minute, will give Bernie Ecclestone something to think about.

Nelson Piquet Jnr won for Brazil and the Australian driver called Will Power camd 2nd. 3rd place went to Mexico and, forgive me, I can't remember the driver's name. Yes111
