This is a novel by Robert Conrad I picked up in Target one day. It's premise? Britian declares war on the United States during the American Civil War. (It almost happened).:-(

The real incident was a British ship the Trent, that was seized by an American Naval ship, the San Jacinto in International Waters. The purpose? To capture two Confederate Representatives, Mason and Slidell who were heading to London to try and convince Britain to enter the war. Only much groveling by President Lincoln prevented it. 11,000 British troops were in Eastern Canada on the Maine border waiting to invade. Lincoln realized he would have a two front war on his hands.
Close, huh?

Book is very good Sight and keeps you from putting it down. I wont have to rewrite it to my poor standards! LOL! All kidding aside, I am curious to see his other book called 1901. That is supposed to be about Kaiser Wilhelm and Bismarck.

Monty, the Union could have lost the war. Basically what the Confederacy was banking on, (and almost successfully) was the North would get tired of the entire mess and sue for peace. If Lee, had won at Gettysburg, (he almost did), the North would have entered into negotiations. Gettysburg really was the high water mark for the Confederacy. Had Lee thrown all 90,000 of his army into it would they have won? Even if they did win, would they have been so mauled, it would have been a Pyhrric victory? What about the Confederacy accepting black soldiers?
(That was put forward too. Need another post for that).
Gettysburg is facsinating in itself. The why, how etc.
