Slow server? by Lounge Trekker on 19 July 2006 7:06am

I'm quite frunstrated with trying to enjoy this great page and interract with you fine folks. Has anybody anything similar to add to my subject line: that I find the server quite slow?

On a more positve note: I'm in Canada and enjoying the summer here. It is quite temperate and fine.

Hey, Trekker! I find that there are certain times of the day, I'm GUESSING the middle of the night in Britain, when this site "times out." They are probably doing their back-ups and updates on the server. If this were a mission-critical website, like a gov't/military website, they'd have massive, cost prohibitive ways of keeping that from happening, but it's just us chickens!

Thanks CG! That makes sense. Being in Canada means I do access this site in the middle of the British night.

It is slow now and it is 6 A.M. in London. Then again, it is hot in my house.

Thanks for the input, tucsonmike. So if you're in Tucson and the server in London is slow...?

It's 12:30pm CDT and everything's just fine. I'd complain about the heat, but it wouldn't do any good.

It is not necessarily the server which is slow when your computer seems to be taking longer to access a website. A lot of the busy times are during working hours in your area when businesses are accessing the internet a lot and also in the evenings in your area when home computer users are most active. If either of these coincide with the busy times from other areas during which the server will be extremely busy then the multiplexing required to feed from the server to all the people accessing it requires much more time than when there is less activity for internet access. This may be why the server seems slow.
Also dial up connections are said to be slower than broadband and I have found the internet access time reasonable with our dial up facility.
In summary I would recommend patience for internet access at certain times.

Yes, Ken, of course you right about the need to exersise patience! Thank you for reminding me of the complexity of the internet.

No complaints about the heat here. The winters are cold and wet and much too long, so if we need to hang out at the lake to remain comfortable...hey, I can live with that.
