Michael Palin - The Python Years 1969-1979
Hatchards, 187 Piccadilly, W1J 9LE Map

These days he's better known for swanning off on his next incredible jaunt around the world, but Michael Palin made his name as a television presenter, writer and an unforgettable comedian in Monty Python's Flying Circus. The multi-talented performer even took time out to scribble down everything that was going on in a diary.

The book tells the story of the incredible, sudden success of the Monty Python TV series and the movie spin-offs alongside the rest of Palin's life. He is contending with a new family and continuing his interest in other projects. There's not much grit or hardship, instead its a lovely tale of talent and good fortune - it makes a pleasant change.

Furthermore you can't begrudge him his luck. In fact, in the flesh Palin is just the affable, slightly faltering Englishman you would expect from his TV personality.

I might try to go. Depends how long my morning lecture runs. I'm wondering if I already bought the book somewhere else, can I still go to this bookstore's signing? You can do that in America, not sure about the UK...

I think some places let you have other things signed and some don't. When I went to a booksigning for Full Circle we were expressly told that we could not have any other items signed. These , I might add, were not Michael's wishes, but the store's. Maybe you should phone them beforehand so you won't be disappointed.

I was hoping to go there lunchtime but too much work - I probably wouldn't have had time to queue up anyway.

Yes, I went. It was fabulous! MP was very lively. There was a signifigant leak close to where he was sitting in the bookstore and he was joking about it. Seemed like alot of people showed up - but it was hard to tell because the line snaked upstairs into the store. I asked him if he was finished in Poland & he said yes- he's off to Romania next (or next week). And my book is now signed. I'm up to the end of 1971...
