Black sausages, silly sausages, sausage dogs and sausage sizzles.. by ev on 12 October 2006 12:56pm

Here, I've started a thread on the above topics.. In Germany where I'm currently living and working sausages are very popular, but quite different of course from those in Australia, where bbq sausages are perhaps even more popular.

Feel free here to discuss anything you know about sausages, your favourite type of sausage, the word 'sausage', or indeed any phrases or idioms that contain the word 'sausage'.

Regards,

Evan, Tübingen, Deutschland.

I'm quite partial to a good snag and sometimes a big fat wurst.

One of the first things I discovered when I first came here was that for dinner, the Germans often have simply bread with an assortment of sausages/cold meats and cheeses, rather than a fully blown cooked meal, although of course if you go to a restaurant for dinner that's not the case.

It is normal for the bread to be held in one hand, while the cold wurst or cheeses are held in the other, and they are eaten alternately.

In Australia it is more normal for everything to be stacked on the bread (on between two slices of it) first, before it is eaten..

In this area they say 'Gruß Gott' ('Greet God'), instead of 'Guten Tag' :) The dialect is called 'Schwäbisch', and one of their special dishes is called 'Maultaschen' which is a bit like ravioli I guess, with kind of pasta on the outside, and sausage meat on the inside..

Sausages wieners, Yum. lol

Germans usually eat their main meal during the 12-3 hours. Evening meals are light and more like sandwiches. I find it quite the same for breakfasts, cold cuts and cheeses much of the time.

Anyone for a blutwurst? (sp.)
