The Chatter Box : Blathering On
My Friday 13th by perfectbitch on 18 October 2006 9:49am
You know, sometimes I feel like I've walked into a surreal play - Aykbourn.

Last Thursday, I drove to the Isle of White to spend a few days with my elderly mother who is terminally ill and in a nursing home called Springfield : ). I arrived mid afternoon and took Mum to Ventnor where we enjoyed a cuppa sitting on the sea front, chewing the fat and watching the tide roll in. On the way home, Mum said that she had to buy crisps because she'd run out of them. I decided to drive a little further to a Morrisons superstore just a few miles passed Springfield. Once there, she said she was hungry and so we sat and had refreshments in the cafe. As I stay in Mum's flat when I am there, I had to buy a few provisions for myself and so I left Mum in the cafe while I bought my bits and her crisps. I then took her back and arranged to take her out to lunch the following day...

I then drove to my sister's house to pick up the keys to Mum's flat. I hadn't been there 5 minutes when my sister had a call from Springfield. Apparently, Mum had been caught smoking in an undesignated smoking area and when she was challenge about it, she threw a huge tantrum. She must have bought the ciggies while I was shopping!

So, we get to Friday 13th. Mum rang to say that she was ill, in bed and wouldn't be going out to lunch (her usual stratagy whenever she has done anything wrong). So I arranged to visit her with some magazines, later that afternon and busied myself with ironing any of my clothes that had creased in my travel bag etc. I turned the radio on and it was a local station. I was just about to leave when there was an announcement on the radio that there was a problem in Sandown (a small town I have to drive through to get to Springfield) and that the leisure centre and the surrounding area had been evacuated because workmen refurbishing the leisure centre had found an unexploded grenade!!

I consulted my map and found an alternative but lengthy route and went on my way. On arrival at Springfield, the staff asked me why I had given Mum the ciggies. I asked them if she'd said that I did and they told me that she had heavily implied that I had!!! When asked where she got them she said, "Lindsey must have put them in my drawer."

So, there it is - my 80 year old mother, dying and yet can still put the boot in and manipulate, connive and be generally nasty. You have to laugh and admire her tenacity.

When I'm 80, if I live that long, I would like to wear jodphurs, a tweed jacket and hold a whip so I could intimidate every b*****d I've ever met in my earlier years. Ah yes Friday the 13th. The day after Daddy came home from a business trip too tired to see his children and found the energy to s***w his girlfriend. I'm not bitter!

My Friday the 13th wasn't bad. Busy and tiring at work, but could not complain.
The rest of y'all have my sympathy.

I once flew from Australia to London with Mum on Friday the 13th, we were going to my cousin's wedding. the airports were very quiet and the plane was even better it was only just over 1/2 full,Mum and I had 5 seats each to lie on, it was luxury! I'd deffo recommend flying on Friday the 13th.

My Friday the 13th was spent helping to put on a dog show in Alburquerque during the Hot Air Balloon Festival. It was so cool watching all these gorgeous salukis in the ring while hundreds and hundreds of hot air balloons in all shapes, sizes and colors floated overhead. I didn't think the sky could hold that many big balloons. (One landed in the field next to the show and some of the dogs were not amused when people emerged from it.) Probably my best Friday the 13th ever.
