Golden Eagle experience

The other day, Wednesday, Bruno and I walked down to the mouth of the Oyster River where it runs into the sea. I wanted to see the waves as they rocked onto the beach during a strong SE wind we had. It was sobering walking through large trees being rattled by such a strong wind and broken branches littered the trail...I had to step over a few and right around a tree that had fallen across the path.

As we neared the beach, I tied down my hood and pulled down my wide-brimmed hat to help shelter my face and neck from the breeze. The noise grew and the howling of the wind was augmented by the rush of waves onto the gravel beach. We walked the sand and gravel close to the surf, Bruno picking and sniffing for tasty, disgusting, partially decomposed morsels as dogs do. I had my head tucked into my chest to hide from the wind and was surprised when a Golden Eagle rose before me, his 1.5-2 metre wingspan darkening the sky over me, even in the subdued afternoon light. He was very close...2-3 metres away and his brght yellow talons were striking against the predominantly grey beach in the background. He blessed me with a malevolent glare, then glided across the beach to perch on a tree branch.

We walked a little further to a nice log to sit on where we had a good close-up view of the waves breaking on the beach. After a half hour of this, we made our way back along the path that led under the eagle's perch.

As he was near the ground, I tried to keep from making eye contact thereby indicating a threat. I was about three metres below this marvellous bird, and did snap a few photos. Unfortunatly, they were taken hurriedly with no tripod as a tried to keep the camera from the rain. Although the bright yellow talons show clearly in the blur, these photos are nothing to be proud of.

Bald Eagles can be seen often in this area, but seeing a Golden Eagle was a refreshing change.
