P.S. to bIG bLOGGER

You really seem obsessed with California. Do you want to move here like everyone else?

What you have to keep in mind is that California, if it was a country instead of a state, would have the 7th largest economy in the world. It is tremendously diversified unlike the eastern states of the U.S.

What has laid us low is the crash in real estate prices. For 200 years, everyone who invested in real estate in CA made a lot of money but, starting with the "greed is good" 80's, real estate prices got totally out of hand with everyone speculating and the greedy banks were very happy to go along with the frenzy. (I sold a house for $80K in 1980 that later sold for $1.2 million. My timing in financial matters has always been abysmal.)

We got ourselves to a state where the median (not the average!) price of a house was over a half million which was totally out of balance with the average and median incomes of Californians. We've known for a long time that this crash would come.

"....like everyone else?" I have no desire whatsoever to live in California. I said that to Larry when we were standing at the the waterfront along the 7-mile drive near Carmel. One person looked at me like I was a lunatic. She was transplanted to California. I told her outright that I didn't deny it had it's lovely parts but that it couldn't compare with the east coast for everything as a whole. That stopped her in her tracks. lol. I told her I wasn't just merely referring to scenery and weather, either.
To me it's a beautiful place to visit (in some areas) but I'd NEVER want to live there. No offense to anyone, because I know others feel that way aobut places they've lived or seen too.

Thank you,Geraldine, for your expert comment on the state of California.

I wouldn't say I am 'obsessed' about anything at all. Or wanting to move to California.
Just trying to work out why things have got so stretched, that's all.
But I have been sort of fascinated with California ever since I read Steinbeck's GRAPES OF WRATH at age 16.
Maybe the golden years are now over and it is not such an ideal place to think of migrating to any longer.

If California has the 7th largest economy in the world, and if what mike says about Arnold is right, then I still wonder if he had the qualifications to be a good Governor, but then of course only a small part of the blame can be attached to him anyway because of the peculiar nature of Californian politics.
