More about earthquakes. by Ken Dunn on 30 April 2007 1:21am

I've been checking the iris seismon website regularly and have noticed an extraordinarily large number of earthquakes on the western Pacific rim.
I wonder what causes this with less activity at the other tectonic plate edges. It is probably because that plate edge is more mobile for being mostly under the sea and sea water lubricates the edge. But then the mid Atlantic ridge is under the sea but by being a ridge it is probably volcanic and volcanic eruptions along that ridge tend to self seal as the seawater cools the eruption. The same volcanic theory probably applies to the Mid Indian (Ocean) Ridge.

We had an "earthquake" in my neck of the woods on Saturday night (I don't live anywhere near a major fault line, BTW - the fault line running through New Caledonia and Vanuatu is 1000km to my east). I say "earthquake" because it only measured 2.6 on the Richter scale. Needless to say, I did not feel a thing.

My wife said she felt the earth move last night.
I was nightshift.
Can't say I noticed.

Did MP experience any earthquakes on his Pacific Rim journey? I can't remember.
