Tommy Makem by tucsonmike on 4 August 2007 2:42am

For those who do not know who he was, he was an Irish singer. He died of cancer @ 74.
In the seventies, he performed in the bar Elaine used to hang out in with her friend Patty Clooney in the next door Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. The Bulldogs used to have regular Irish music. By the time Elaine and I moved in together up the street, it was a sad place, guys in one corner, women in the other, complaining about how the blacks were going to run them out of Boston.

Ah, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy, great stuff. Sorry to learn of his passing. As I said in another thread Mike, you seem to have some great personal anecdotes that would be worthy of a book.

I do remember seeing The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem at Newcastle City Hall in 1962 (I was 15. I did like their songs, and without being very aware, the way they sang them. I later liked The Pogues, the newspaper obit. of Tommy Makem I saw said they much influenced these guys. (I will email you sometime a personal anecdote about Pogues sometime).
I do like the way you put personal reminiscences into your postings, Mike. For someone knowing not-a-lot of this sort of the detail of USA life it's fascinating (a word I over-use, but it's true)

Shucks, just by traveling and listening to folks I gain much of this.
