Report on Michael! by TERRY S on 20 June 2008 8:58pm

Following on from my Michael 8PM thread, here is an account of my evening seeing Michael. To those asking for photos, I asked one of the Waterstone's book shop staff to take a photo while my fiance and I were getting our book signed. We weren't allowed to use flash photography and only use mobile phone cameras. he wasn't posing for photos. The guy who took my mine wobbled the camera and it looks dire to be honest.

Anyway, he (Michael) showed slides of photos from New Europe, some of which are in his book or on this site.

He told us sad things about the break-up of Yugoslavia and World World II, etc. But he also told us funny anecdotes, too, like his first take of the opening scene of New Europe where he falls over. Sort of, "Hi, welcome to new Europe and look at this scenery.......!". Splat! Our favourite anecdote is where he said that after his leech therapy, the puncutures in his chest would bleed a bit, but don't worry it won't be that bad. So, he's in the hotel with his bandages on, and thought no more of it and went to sleep. Wakes up next morning to see there is blood everywhere! He says it was like The Godfather had been in. He kept looking for the horse's head! He said he was worried if the maid went in later, "Oh, I'll just clean this room........ARGGHHH!!!!!!".

After his (wonderful) talk - he's a good speaker,BTW - he stayed to sign his new book. He's a real nice guy. Unfortunately, I didn't get to say much to him, because the Waterstones staff were a bit too keen to move you on. Had a good time, though. He made us laugh.

Thanks so much for the report Terry and I am glad to that you had such a good time. In Perth at the NE book signing, photographs were stopped, two or three people from me which is just well since I err'd with the camera and after 8 shots of backs of peoples heads and the podium, my memory card was full anyway. !
