I have NEVER been any fan of JOHN CLEESE, but Ive always liked the work of Palin,Jones,Gilliam and Idle.
I think it is highly ungracious and disappointing that Mr. Cleese would make such disparaging remarks about his erstwhile-home Town, especially as he now lives in a grandiose £8million Spanish-style villa in Beverley Hills,LA.
Jill Dando also came from Weston-Super-Mare, and she always spoke well of HER home town,so if it was good enough for Jill, why is Mr.Cleese complaining?

I am a fan of JC, yes, plead guilty !:-)
He always dissed Weston-super-Mare, so there's nothing new to me, besides, in this article he just said it's not attractive. And I think he has the right to like and dislike any place, as all of us do. I really, honestly don't see the point of presenting it as a scandal. The fact that Weston is the town he was born doesn't automatically mean that he must like it forever...

I wasn't presenting it as a scandel (or do you mean the news people?), I just thought you guys might be interested. I personally love my hometowns. Yes, I have two. I class Exeter as my hometown, too, even though I come from Sheffield.

A few years ago John slandered a place called Palmerston North, in New Zealand, calling it the most boring place on earth, amongst other things, from memory. The locals were very upset and went into overdrive with a tourism drive and really put the place on the map.
It was a nasty thing for John to do, really. Unnecessary.

Unfortunately, famous people are put in a position where their mouths are bigger than other peoples, and they have to learn the hard way how responsible they want to be when they use them.

TERRY, of course I didn't mean *you* presenting it as a scandal, and thank you for posting this, it is always interesting to read about our guys ! I was just surprised that the paper devoted the whole article to the fact that JC said that Weston "is not attractive"... I don't see it really a big deal.
I still want to go there, though. I just *love* places by the sea. Been born and living in one at the moment.

Not very long ago Ringo Starr said similar thing about Liverpool. Maybe they should think twice about what exactly they say about their hometowns/cities in public, but who can blame them? I could easily go to the press and tell negative things about my home village and home town, since I practically hate both (or I am, at least, tired of living here) and I know all those people who know my family would go around saying "she used to like the place, she used to be such a nice girl". However, no one would be interested of what I say, 'cause I am not celebrity :)
Famous people tell awgul things about their ex-wives/husbands/girlfriends/boyfriends in public. Why their hometowns would be different?
