Wimbledon Cover-UP by bIG bLOGGER on 24 April 2009 4:00pm
For the first time in its prestigious 132-year history, the Centre Court at Wimbledon has been covered over with a huge steel retractable roof.
That's a hell of a lot of money to shell out just to stop Cliff Richard from singing!
(..in the rain)

I said that to Don. I said, "Cliff is out of a job, now!".
Re: Wimbledon Cover-UP by Ken Dunn on 25 April 2009 11:04am
I didn't think Cliff's singing was that bad!?

Do you think they're blaming cliff for the cost when they should actually be blaming the rain?!

I hope they've got floodlights on the inside for when it rains on very grey days. If they haven't got floodlights for these conditions then Cliff will be able to sing again!

Problem solved.

We have a retractable roof on Centre Court at Rod Laver Arena the Australian Open.
It's wonderful and amazing to sit beneath and watch open or close, as I have done many times, it takes about 20 minutes.
There was a fair bit of controversy initially as the tournament, a Grand Slam event, is supposed to be outdoors and it was felt that the players playing under a closed roof were advantaged, which I suppose they probably are.
Ours is used not only to avoid rain delays, but also to combat the extreme heat, as the Oz Open is played in January and the court temp can reach mid 50s celcius. This year several players retired from the tournament due to heat stress, and these are very very fit people so it shows you just how hot it gets here.

Thanks for that,Karen.
It's never quite that hot at Wimbledon,West London, but you'd never know it by the amount of strawberries and cream the visitors get through in a fortnight.

Most of our newspapers reported the new roof, and nearly all of them had a dig at Cliff Richard as well, because he's the butt of a lot of jokes.

Tom Utley (DAILY MAIL columnist) pointed out how The SUN said:
"This 1,000-ton roof means crooner Sir Cliff will never again have a bawl (mm -terrible SUN-pun!) at Wimbledon.."

and The DAILY MAIL said:
"The 3000-ton Wimbledon roof that keeps you dry AND stops Cliff singing..."

--and he didn't fail to notice in passing the disparity in the weight of the roof in these 2 reports. Which raises the pertinent question: How do you weigh a retractable roof?? :)

Do Brits really hate Cliff, or is this just their way of never complimenting anyone, no matter how good they are?
Re: Wimbledon Cover-UP by geordiegirl on 25 April 2009 6:30pm
I've never been a fan of Cliff, but I think he'd be regarded by most as a National Treasure.

Yes, Judy, I think a lot of Brits still do the deprecation thing. (And the media fan it, of course)

I'm intrigued now so someone please enlighten me about what Cliff Richard has to do with Wimbledon.

Geraldine, it poured with rain at Wimbledon and matches were postponed. Cliff was at Centre Court and to boost everyone's morale (??) he decided to get up and sing and get everyone else to do so as well.

Cliff is a great tennis fan and plays himself. I believe he is involved with an organisation that trains children and young people in tennis.

It's about time there was a retractable roof at Centre Court. They have been talking about it for years. You are way ahead in Australia, Kazzzz.

I have Centre Court seats again this year so it will be interesting to see the roof.

You forgot tto also mention that he used to date Sue Barker, who was a tennis player and is now a presenter on the Wimbledon coverage. I personally wish people would give Cliff Richard a break -he's a nice guy, and doesn't deserve the rap he gets.
