Sit Right Here and Have Another Beer in Mexico...NOT! by tucsonmike on 31 May 2009 9:37pm

We never go, between the Swine Flu talk, delays @ the border, the drug gangs and plain robbery, almost no one I know goes to Mexico and we live so close.

I consider going to Vegas or L.A. a big deal. Oh no! I am becoming a Middle American, lol!

Well, we really can't afford to travel anymore. Growing up in New York City, I never thought in my life I would see going to L.A. as a big deal, almost going to the promised land. Networking, large book festivals etc. Would not want to live there.

More and more, I see Tucson as my "city-state."

We went to Mexico (Puerta Vallarta) a few years ago and absolutely loved it.

It was a long tiring journey (13 hours, including refuelling in Florida) but it was so worth it.

The hotel was fantastic and was the best all-included place we have been to before or since (so far!). Sitting outside having brekkie with (wild) humming birds just inches away was unbelievable, but then to be able to sit on the beach (owned by the hotel) and watch dolphins swim across the bay at the same time EACH DAY was just stunning.

Add to all that the fact that I and the rest of the family swam with dolphins (no - not the ones I have just mentioned!!), the weather was great and the people sooo friendly, and you've got a great holiday!!

But I realise that is just a tourist-viewpoint Mike and can understand where you are coming from on that.

[Oh and coming back it was only 7 hours or something! They flew over Canada]

tucsonmike: I can understand your logic about best avoiding Mexico at the moment.
If you went to L.A.--where would you want to visit, and where would you stay? Do you have any friends at all in L.A. or its environs? Are you,for example,a 'beach/sunbathing/surfer' sort of a guy? I think if I was there I would head for the beaches.

As of today, U.S. citizens have to have passports to get back into the country from Mexico (and Canada.) It used to be so easy to pop across the border. Since so very few Americans have passports (and it can take months to get one), tourism is going to plummet.
