Armchair traveller. by Ken Dunn on 8 June 2010 5:18am
To make better use of the internet I decided to try and find city video cameras which were on our historic computer a long time ago. I found EarthCam and once again have been fascinated by the views you can obtain from famous locations all around the world. The only recommendation I would make is to calculate that it is daylight in any location you select, although, in saying that, night time views in cities can be spectacular too.

It's been in the news lately that the sites on Google that show streets and neighborhoods has been an invasion of privacy. Not sure there will be a lawsuit or not. Interesting though.

There is even access to 12 of the Citylink cameras around Melbourne, each showing a snapshot of the traffic conditions at about 15 second intervals.

They've even got cameras at the North and South Poles.

None in the Himalaya but that makes sense. (Mr P's book has plenty of Himalayan scenes.)

I've now set up my bookmarks so that I can see what the weather is like in Norway, Glasgow, New Zealand, Vancouver, Split, Belgium an Rio de Janeiro all within about 5 minutes.

I thought you had an Apple, ken. Just one push of a button and it shows you anything you want instantly once you set it up .. I only have my town, Grange, Rotherham and Melbourne. But I could add more. I also have the time and 6-day forecast. You should be able to do that if you have an iMac.

Ken there's a citylink camera about 500m from my house, ill go and stand under it and wave!

OK, Kazzzz. I remember when I looked at the citylink cameras for Melbourne there were at least 10 of them. Which one is it?
There are actually 12 from Flemington Road and Bolte Bridge etc.. It looks too dangerous for you to be standing about in camera shot, Kazzzz.
The nearest webcam to me is at St Andrews golf course and as it's about 40 miles away and on the course itself. I'm afraid I couldn't easily wave to anyone from it.

Have you tried Google Earth Ken ? It isn't 'live' but I think you would enjoy it.
