Anybody know where to get one? by Spursfan on 30 September 2010 11:15am

Our last kettle was a top of the range Breville which not only filtered but would keep the water hot (never used the facility) and would light up blue if on boil and red if keeping hot. It also matched the toaster. Eventually, sadly, it stopped automatically switching off and after months of denial a couple of months ago I agreed we needed a new one though I loved that kettle!! :'(

After years, or even decades using filter kettles, the husband and I were really fed up of buying expensive filters, and bought a new non-filter kettle from Asda, it was also 'round' and not a 'jug' as we usually had.

We had forgotten what is was like npot to have filtered water in the kettle, and after the first boil, you could see the bottom of the kettle beginning to 'fur up' !!

When we last had a non-filter kettle, back in the 80s, we had something that looked like a screwed up piece of wire that you popped into the kettle and it attracted all the limescale. Periodically you would take it out and rinse it. Simples.

Trouble is, we can't find them in the shops now!! I have found them online but for something that costs pence you pay about a fiver postage!!

Has anyone (in the UK) seen them on the high street? I guess it is the sort of thing you would get at a £ shop, but we have checked the ones in Stafford and no joy.

:(

Well I reckon a fiver postage is cheap if you get the item cheap and get what you want! You could go trapesing around loads of shops and never find one.

This is the sort of thing I mean, though I have seen them a lot cheaper than this on the internet!

However I didn't know Homebase sold them, will probably have a look tomorrow. But if you know of anywhere cheaper on the high street.....!!

Sorry Kazzzz, didn't see oyur post before I posted!!

I know what you're saying, but it irks me to pay more in postage than in item.

That's OK!
Wherever you can get one it doesn't matter, as long as you get what you want!

I've been looking for an aardvark shaped lawn sprinkler in fact.....anyone seen one??? ;)
I do know what you mean about the postage the postage though....Jason's bought stuff the size of a matchbox and paid 15 bux postage. Outrageous.

Sometimes to get over import duty (I think it is) sellers will charge a minimal price for things (on EBay for example) but charge a huge amount for postage. I'm talking about retail outlets, not people flogging secondhand stuff, though they may do it too I don't know.

So then when they fill in the customs sticker they just put (for example): Goods - £2.50.

That's ok, so long of course that the price you pay + postage is still a bargain! We have bought several (new) things such as MP4s and DVDs that way.

I actually don't get what you're talking about. I've never heaard of this. The light-up one on the other hand......! It's called a Spectra. They're lovely. We had one last year and when it gave up I was upset as I loved it. The only thing I hate about new kettles is when you get them, they have a really weird smell, that makes your tea taste a bit like the horrid river-water style coffee you have when you go camping that tastes like......UGHHHHH! You know what I mean.

What I was actually talking about, Terry is a 'wire kettle descaler' - it looks like, well if you go to the link I put above you'll see!!

You put it in the kettle, and leave it there and it attracts the limescale. Then every so often you rinse it under the tap. We used one regularly before we got filtered water jugs and kettles.

Going to have a look in Homebase on Sunday.

:)

It's not a problem we get in Scotland, where most of the water is 'soft'.
