Is Ireland in the Middle Ages? by Loretto on 15 November 2012 12:52pm

I posted this on Twitter yesterday.

Galway is my home county, and I attended University in Galway. When I was there we had a referendum on whether or not condom machines should be placed in University bathrooms, this was a nationwide university referendum.

Galway was the only university to vote no. I was so shocked at the time, even as a a good Catholic abiding nerd I knew that it was unfair to impose my ideology on other people, so I voted yes to condom machines. ( I have since changed my Catholic abiding ways)

Here's what has happened now: a 31 year old Indian girl who was a dentist in Galway died after hospital medical staff refused to terminate her pregnancy because they could still hear a feotal heart beat. The woman was told, "This is a Catholic country," when she asked for a pregnancy termination.

The woman developed septicima and died. I cannot understand why the Irish still hold on to the Catholic Church's teachings after all the crap that's happened over there!

Just thinking outloud and talking to myself here:

Is Ireland in the middle ages? Sadly, in this case very much so, I think this case is going to be a wake up call.

Mike, you're being polite, and you won't insult me by saying yes Ireland is in the middleages! I spoke to my sister who is a lecturer in social nursing at NUI Galway and she said hundreds of people are protesting outside of the hospital because of this poor woman's death! And I hope the family sues, I do. I know the medical staff's hands were tied because of a stupid law, but the family in India must be over wrought at the loss of their wife/daughter. "This is a catholic country," is not a good enough reason to impose an ideology on a non- national. Separation of church and state needs to happen in Ireland. I just hope there are more open minded people than traditionalists to make it happen.
