Cost of Innoculations for travel in Asia? by cassiel on 29 June 2003 6:36am

I'm in the midst of planning a trip to some remote areas in Asia, and I was surprised to learn that the innoculations (and there are plenty of them!) will cost in excess of $1,300!! Has anyone else spent that much on their innoculations? Does everyone bother to get innoculations or am I being to precautious?

..check with a really good international-type dr. before signing on to multitudes of shots...yes, the 10 yr. old lasting holds true but really do check in with an expert and there are MANY who can direct you to the proper shots for the specific locations you are heading for. some of those nasty shots are as nasty as the diseases themselves. check them out carefully. where is Michael when we need him....there is an expert on shots if we ever knew one.....

Thank you for the replies.
Speaking of malaria, I'm hearing a lot of mixed stories about Lariam - is there anyone here who does NOT feel any ill effects from it?

My husband and I got some innoculations (Hepatitis A/B, MMR booster, tetanus/diptheria, and yellow fever) before going to Peru last year. We went to a travel clinic near Boston, and the doc was very knowledgeable about exactly what we would need based on our exact itinerary. Our health insurance ended up covering the cost. I guess they figured that preventative innoculations are a lot cheaper than treating us if we come home ill!

The cost of shots certainly varies depending on where you live - and how much you shop around. I saved probably 40% once on a yellow fever shot just by calling a few different places.

And I've taken Lariam for up to several months without any ill effects. That is, except for a rather large draining of my wallet.
