I so admire Angelina Jolie for saying that she has had a preventative double mastectomy which has improved her chances of living, changing her risk of dying from breast cancer from 87% to 5%.

The reason I admire her is that it will show women who have the faulty gene that it is ok to go ahead with the op; even with someone like Brad in your life.

Well done Angelina - I wish you a long and happy life.

I am happy that she is leading the way Anne. I just wonder how far preventative medicine will take us. Last year both Sean and I had A-typical freckles removed. Mine was on the back of my left thigh, his was on his left shoulder blade.

Because Sean's was on a high stretch area we had to take him to a plastic surgeon, it still left a massive 1 and a half inch scar on his back.

A-typical means it might turn cancerous, so the doctors precaution patients to remove it, rather than keep an eye on the shape/color of the freckle to make sure it doesn't change. You have 12-18 months before things could get "worse," if you catch my drift.

We pay $800.00 a month for our insurance. Our co-pays are $45 when we go to a doctor. The cost of Sean's procedure was over $6,000 and mine was close to $3,000.

I think here in the US they are scaring the crap out of people about dying, driving us into doctors offices etc; no wonder the medical field is the fastest growing hiring sector.

How about the women who have a family history of breast, ovarian or cervical cancer who can't afford to pay the $3,000 for the blood test to detect this mutated gene? If they can't pay for it, but have a family history, who pays for it then?

I should add that I am not a fan of socialized medicine either. So I don't know what the answer is. Every second ad on television here is for a drug. It is big business.
