South America trip tips? by infinitymedia on 23 September 2003 5:33pm

I'm planning a trip around the South American continent. From Ecuador, Peru to Chile, Patagonia, round to Argentina, Brazil onto Venezuela to finish.

Its a guided trip starting Oct 2004 for nearly 6 months, but you have to organise your own flights to and from.

Does anybody have any information, tips, help they can give me? Anything at all would be great.

Hi! Sounds like you are in for a great trip! Of the countries you mention, I've only been to Peru (so far). It was incredible. My husband and I have posted our photos and travelogue on our web site

If you have any Peru questions, feel free to send us an email!

My advice would be not to overpack - you can buy clothing out there incredibly cheaply, so don't take too much with you! Plus, you'll need plenty of space for ridiculous souvenirs...!

To expand on what decomposingcomposers says - do be prepared for situations to change frequently in Latin America, and the tour might have to change at short notice. I'm just back from a trip through Peru - and some of our group were going to continue into Bolivia, until the recent riots kicked off there. The advantage with a guided trip is that it is someone else's responsibility to sort out where you go next! So, relax and have fun.

I've got a website at - http://www.mykreeve.net - the pictures of Peru aren't online yet, but should be by the end of this week.

Use the guidebook MP used when he was in SA for "Full Circle" -- the South American Handbook by Footprints (first published in 1921 & still going strong!). Per MP "I carried (it) from Cape Horn to Cartagena and consulted it every night for two months. And I wouldn't do that for anything else except my hip flask."

Also, visit the Torres del Paine -- I have one of Basil's pictures of it on my desktop:

Unfortunately, it has some guy standing in the way... ;-)
