Travel in Tunisia by Highlander on 18 November 2003 12:00am

Recently returned from Tunisia and visiting some of the locations covered by MP in his Sahara adventure. Filmed exhaustively, but a bit disappointed that I did not read the book before I went otherwise I would have shot more meaningful film. If you travel to Tunisia, allow one month to cover the major attraction of this country. If you can`t spare a month I can offer short cuts to see the best bits........

Yeah, I have just been there, and it's a fascinating country with a surprising amount of history and culture.
By African standards Tunisia is doing quite well for itself, with self-sufficiency in food, good roads and infrastructure, and free education for all. The trick with this country is to get away from the tourist resorts like Hammamet, and go into the desert and see some of the Islamic towns and cities. If you're only there for a short time, I very much recommend the two-day desert safari. It takes you to the Roman amphitheater at El-Jem, then down the coast to Sfax, before going inland to Tatouine (sp?) where the Star Wars movies were shot. After visiting some cave dwelling people (Troglodytes) we went across the desert to Douz. Stayed in a lovely hotel out in the desert, surrounded by sand dunes. Food fit for a king!! Next day, up early to catch the bus and across the great salt lake at Shott-el-Jerit, close to the Algerian border, then to the great Islamic city of El-Kairouan.
All in all, a good holiday and a country well worth visiting.
